Kampala, Oct. 8, 2025 —

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has appealed to striking teachers to resume work, assuring them that Parliament will address their concerns over salary disparities in the upcoming 2026/27 national budget.

Her remarks followed a petition presented to her by leaders of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), who are demanding that government eliminate the pay gap between teachers of humanities and those of science subjects.

“I want to request you, please go back and do the work as we handle this issue,” Speaker Among told UNATU representatives at Parliament. “Now that you have come to Parliament, there is no way Parliament will let you down — no way! I have given you my commitment, and that commitment is on behalf of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni because whatever we do here, we work hand in hand with the Executive.”

Among urged teachers to avoid paralyzing the education sector, promising that both Parliament and the Executive are united in finding a lasting solution.

“Let’s not paralyze the country,” she emphasized. “Go back and work — this issue will be resolved. It’s in our best interest that you are happy and your welfare is improved because you mean a lot to this country.”

The Speaker further disclosed that President Museveni is fully briefed on the teachers’ grievances and has expressed support for efforts to harmonize the salary structure.

“As Parliament of Uganda, I want to promise you that we shall do whatever it takes to ensure that these issues are resolved,” Among said. “All these matters revolve around money, and I am glad that you have brought your petition before we begin the budgeting process.”

The teachers’ strike, which has disrupted learning in several schools across the country, stems from government’s decision to increase salaries for science teachers while leaving their counterparts in humanities earning significantly less — a policy UNATU says has demoralized many educators and undermined unity within the teaching profession.
