The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has accused former Nakawa East Member of Parliament, Mr Kabaziguruka Michael, of orchestrating his arrest, linking the incident to political rivalry ahead of the 2026 elections.
Mufumbiro was arrested on Monday after attending a court session where fellow NUP members Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi were charged with conducting unlawful military drills. On Wednesday, he was produced before Kawempe Magistrates Court alongside NUP’s Sauda Madada, who was arrested in Busia on Tuesday.
The two were charged with unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and related offences, before being remanded until September 29.
Speaking before court, Mufumbiro, who is contesting for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat, alleged that Kabaziguruka, his political rival, was behind his ordeal.
The case file now includes both Mufumbiro and Madada, alongside six of NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s private security personnel, who are already on remand on similar charges.
Mufumbiro denied the accusations, insisting that he was a victim of political persecution.
The charges stem from a parade organized months ago by NUP supporters to celebrate Kyagulanyi’s birthday, where members wore red berets. The UPDF maintains that the beret is reserved exclusively for the army, while NUP insists its version is distinct.
UPDF spokesperson Brig. Felix Kulayigye warned that all participants in the event would face arrest and prosecution.
