The wait is over! The Electoral Commission has officially cleared Rtd. Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu to be nominated for the presidency in the 2026–2031 elections. His nomination is set for Wednesday, marking a major breakthrough for the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) and its partners.
The confirmation came late Tuesday from ANT’s Acting National Coordinator, Hon. Alice Alaso, who could not hide her excitement:
“Gen. Muntu finally cleared.
He will be nominated tomorrow, awaiting time allocation by EC.
Thank you all for your unwavering support. With this level of commitment, we will surely give Uganda the change they can trust.”
Muntu’s path to clearance has been anything but smooth. Just days ago, the Electoral Commission dropped a shocker, ruling that his nomination lacked valid signatures from 50 districts, while NUP was short by 18 signatures. The hurdle threatened to derail his presidential bid.
But in a dramatic turnaround, Alaso rushed to submit additional signatures on Monday, leaving the camp on edge as they awaited the final greenlight. Today’s clearance has now reignited optimism within the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and ANT, who had already endorsed Muntu as their flagbearer.
Muntu’s nomination tomorrow is expected to set the stage for a heated 2026 race, adding fresh energy to Uganda’s political battlefield.
