In a move to strengthen Uganda’s judicial system, President Yoweri K. Museveni has appointed Hon. Lady Justice Abodo Jane Frances as the new Principal Judge. This announcement was made through an official letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament on August 30, 2025.

Lady Justice Abodo, who has been serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), brings a wealth of experience to the role. Her appointment follows the promotion of Justice Flavian Zeija to the position of Deputy Chief Justice, creating a vacancy that has now been filled by Abodo.

The President’s letter, issued under the powers vested by the 1995 Constitution, noted that the appointment follows advice from the Judicial Service Commission. The next step for Justice Abodo’s appointment will be parliamentary approval, with her name and curriculum vitae set to be forwarded for consideration.

The move is seen as a significant development in Uganda’s judiciary, as Lady Justice Abodo is known for her dedication to justice and integrity. Her new role will involve overseeing the day-to-day operations of the judiciary, ensuring the proper functioning of the judicial system, and maintaining its independence.

As Uganda continues its path toward judicial reforms, Lady Justice Abodo’s appointment is viewed as a step toward enhancing the efficiency and accountability of the legal system.
