Shock and disbelief gripped residents of Bufundi Sub County in Rubanda District, Kigezi Sub-region, after a National Resistance Movement (NRM) aspirant was caught red-handed stealing livestock.

Turyahumura Onesmas Akankwasa, who is vying for the position of District Councilor, was intercepted by vigilant locals as he attempted to make away with two sheep. The irate residents apprehended him, tied him up with ropes, and handed him over to the nearest police station for alleged robbery.

The incident has sparked outrage within the community, with many questioning the integrity of individuals seeking public office.

“We had long suspected him of being behind the increasing cases of livestock theft in our village, but we had no proof—until now,” said Tumwesigye, a respected elder in the area. “Now that his ’40 days’ have come to an end, we urge the police to expedite investigations and ensure he is brought to justice.”

Livestock theft has become a growing concern in Rubanda, and residents fear that electing such individuals into leadership could worsen the situation.

Our phone calls to Elly Matte the regional Police Spokesperson for Kigezi went unanswered by the time of filing this story.
